Weather leads to Fly-In’s cancellation

Entering last week organizers behind the annual Van Zandt County Regional Airport Fly-In and Open House were cautiously optimistic, hoping that Mother Nature would cooperate in the form of comfortable temperatures and dry weather Oct. 13.

That optimism turned to disappointment mid-week as the initially forecast changed dramatically to include an increased chance of heavy rain and potentially dangerous storms heading into the weekend.

Second graders work on problem solving

Second graders students in Rebecca Ragsdale’s class joined together for a group photo after making their presentations Sept. 14.

WPISD is implementing a framework this year that involves allowing students to flourish by going beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic in the classroom.

Earnest O Woods Intermediate teacher Rebecca Ragsdale is challenging her 2nd grade gifted and talented students by engaging them in tasks that require problem solving, critical thinking, and perseverance. “In 2018, problems can be ‘googled’ for a solution. We want our students to have the skills to solve problems on their own!”, said Ragsdale.

Band program kicks off 2018-’19 school year

The Wills Point Tiger Band was given a small reprieve from the recent run of triple degree temperatures for their first days of full band practices outside, kicking off 2.5 weeks of pre-school year work July 30. The first days of the practices included a heavy focus on marching fundamentals, and getting students back in shape for the 2018-’19 school year.

The Tiger Band has been a model of consistency over the past two decades, earning 19 consecutive Sweepstakes Awards and seven consecutive appearances in the UIL State Marching Band Contest entering the 2018-’19 school year.

The band program will look to keep each streak alive during the upcoming school year, beginning full band rehearsals July 30 with a new head band director for the first time in more than two decades.
