Late season hunting opportunities abound across the state, but many hunters have abandoned the marshes and woodlots for the comfort of their warm fireplace. If you thrill to the sound of whistling wings over decoys or the sight of a big meat hog slipping within view during the last moments of daylight, this might be a mistake! We modern day sportsmen and women have it made when it comes to staying warm and dry. With today’s modern fabrics, it’s now possible to dress for the occasion and remain comfortable afield, regardless the weather. Long gone are the days of long john’s worn under blue jeans and a plaid hunting coat.
Weather conditions in the Wills Point area have been slightly uncomfortable during the past few days when the mercury fell to 14 degrees. Weatherman Jack Gibbard’s 1968 weather summary revealed that the temperature was close to 100 degrees only once, on Aug. 22. The lowest temperature recorded during the year was 12 degrees on Jan 7. Total rainfall was 49.64 inches or 8.60 above normal. During the month of May 10.05 inches of rain fell while August was the driest with 1.26 inches. One inch of snowfall was reported in January.
The traditional White Gift Service will be held at Wills Point School today, Friday Dec. 20. The first service will be held for the elementary school at 8:30 a.m. junior high and high school will participate in the service at 11 a.m. Both services will be held in the junior high auditorium. school will dismiss at 2:30 p.m. for Christmas holidays, Classes will be resumed on Monday morning Jan. 6. Gifts of food, canned goods or other useful items are wrapped in white and brought for distribution later to needy families. The service is symbolic of the bringing of gifts to the Christ child.
The Reapers Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church held a class social on Nov. 25 at the home of Mrs. John Cotten. Mrs. Ed Cavin brought the devotional using a Thanksgiving theme. She also read a poem suited to the season. Bible bingo was played, and plans made for the Christmas party. Refreshments were served to the teacher, Mrs. H.G. Murray and those in attendance.
Today is the day! Santa arriving with, Big Parade, today at 2:30. The Christmas season will be officially opened in Wills Point today.
Tigers will be busy for a few days; they will play in a tournament on successive days, Monday and Tuesday, play Terrell on a home basis, Thursday and Friday and Saturday of this week in a tournament in Van. Next Monday Dec. 9, the Tigers will play the Terrell Tigers in Terrell.
Sometimes I think about the first person who was brave enough to eat a certain item. For example, who figured out oysters were a dining option? Yikes. Or a chicken leg? Or an egg?
When the weather cools off and autumn is nigh, it’s a good time to take stock of the preparations you’ve made for emergencies or disasters. One lady lamented that she didn’t know how to keep track of what she had. Well, let’s fix that.
I’m typing this story on a computer using a word processing program. Many of you readers have something similar with your computers. You may also have a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel. That’s what you need – a way to make a spreadsheet.
