Council issues Chamber Day proclamation
The Wills Point City Council held its regularly scheduled monthly meeting Aug. 14, moving forward with an agenda that included items ranging from public recognitions to general bookkeeping items.
Business for the council opened with a pair of public hearing on rezoning requests and public recognition before moving to the action items portion of its agenda to issue a proclamation declaring Sept. 13, 2018 Chamber Day in the city of Wills Point.
Mayor pro tem Mike Jones read aloud the proclamation stating, "...the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce and its member provide citizens with a strong business environment that increases the retail trade and commerce and encourages growth in order to make the city of Wills Point a better place to live, work and play and whereas the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce provides guidance and support for local businesses through advertisement and campaigns throughout the year and whereas I issue this proclamation to recognize the WPCOC and its members who so freely of their time and energy...”
Following a group picture, the council moved on to discuss an amended and restated hotel and convention services agreement and performance agreement between the city of Wills Point, Wills Point Hospitality, LLC. and the Wills Point EDC.
Local voters had previously voiced their support for the construction of a hotel to be built in the city of Wills Point. Subsequent delays in funding the project occurred, resulting in all parties involved coming together for a new amended agreement.
City administrator Pam Pearson provided an update on the potential project stating, “I know it seems like it is taking a long time. Yes, it does take a while to put things together, all of your investors. The hotel owner is working behind the scenes. He is spending money behind the scenes. They still intend on having a Best Western Plus, three-story, all indoor acess hotel in Wills Point.”
The timeline presented at the meeting indicated that the hotel’s open date for the general public would be July 1, 2019.
In other business:
-The council recognized WPPD office Chris Haskins for completing his six month probationary period with the city and Samuel Wilson for his participation in the Summer Earn and Learn Program.
-The council approved the appointment of Dr. Dan Turner, DVM to the Wills Point EDC Board of Directors.
