Open house of the Wills Point Public Schools will be held next Thursday night, March 9 in observance of Public Schools Week. Every department and room of the school from the first through the twelfth grades will be open to the public for inspection and students’ work will be displayed. Refreshments will be served in the cafeteria by the cafeteria staff.
“Members of the Wills Point high school basketball team played a team composed of businessmen in Wills Point Tuesday evening in a benefit performance at the school gymnasium. The merchant roster contained approximately two full teams since it was necessary to do substituting at intervals during the game. Starting for the merchants were John C Lybrand, K.C. Lybrand, Charles Curtis, Douglass Lindsey, Jack Scott, Odie Chitty and Glynn Ellis. Others on the roster were Charles Jurden, Glenn McNeill, Jr. F.G. Hardy, Jr. Kelles Miller, Loyd Pond and Eugene Wilcoxson. Glenn Adams coached the merchant’s team.
“Wills Point Tigers cinched the number two spot in district basketball by taking their last two games. Malakoff was the victim of the Tigers last Friday night in the last home game of the season. The local lads took the thriller, 52-48. Richard Shinn led the scoring with 17 points and Karl Lybrand came close with 16. When the Tigers journeyed to Rains Tuesday night the boys cinched the second place in District by taking their opponents 38-33.”

This is his 131st year to forecast the weather for the remaining winter season. Have you ever had a blind date? Was it fun? How exciting was it? Did it give you a scare? The Van Zandt County Library is now offering a blind date - “Blind Date with a Book.” Some books are wrapped with no labels; you just have to choose it and check it out. Friday, February 3, 1961 “Enlarged photos of the Wills Point Tigers, 1960 co-champs of District 17-A, and the Junior High Champions of the district, were presented to the two teams last week by football enthusiast, R.C. Lybrand, Jr. Both photos are enlargements of pictures taken last November of the teams by Muresh Studio in Terrell, and were made at reduced prices. The school is to frame the pictures which will be placed in the trophy cases.” “Homemaking students who served the meal for the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce banquet in the school cafeteria Thursday evening, Jan. 26, were Myra Jo Golden, Peggy Smith, Lynn Ezell, Doris Ferguson, Elaine Edwards, and Dianne Welch. Others were Sue Bronson, Sue Holden, Linda Wheeler and Marilyn Flowers. Such an occasion provides the students with an opportunity to participate in community activities and thus fulfill one of the purposes of the FHA.”
It’s late January, the high temperature today will be 70 degrees, and our topic is getting ready for winter. Perhaps we will have a couple months of cold weather, perhaps not. If we do, let’s get ready for it! How deep in the ground are your water pipes? When the ground surface freezes, the cold penetrates the ground. Eventually it will get deep enough to freeze your water pipes. We all know about keeping a little water running through the pipes to prevent them from freezing. To be on the safe side, start the water when the outdoor temperature is forecast to be freezing. How long should you let the water run? It depends on how long it stays below freezing and how deep your water pipes are. Ours are a foot deep. We dribble the water for twice as long as the weather stays below freezing. By the way, drink plenty of water. It’s easy to get dehydrated in winter. No one expects to get dehydrated in winter, so we never think about it.
Do you ever go into the library and see that there are not many patrons inside? It is very quiet and peaceful at the library. It was reported last week that last week that volunteers are needed to help the library run smoothly. In fact, volunteers help cover the wide array of activities and tasks that needed to be completed for the library to run smoothly. The annual report covering 2016 was just compiled by Van Zandt County Library Director Susie Pulley which also featured an enlightening picture of the numerous library activities. Under program statistics, there were 60 adult programs with 1,100 attendees and 55 children’s programs with 2,433 attendees. Under volunteer statistics, there were 36 volunteers working a total of 2,122 hours. The weekly volunteer average is 41 hours per week.

Friday, January 20,1961 Mrs. Charlie Scott, was honored with a retirement party on Tuesday evening, Jan. 10, at Stella’s dining room when fellow workers and Southwestern Bell Telephone Company district traffic superintendent, J.B. Bell, of Tyler met for a buffet dinner. Mrs. Scott was the recipient of more than one honor at the party. In addition to receiving honors upon her retirement after forty years and 11 months of service with the company, she was honored for having a perfect working attendance for ten years. Mr. Bell presented Mrs. Scott with a lifetime membership certificate in the Telephone Pioneers of America Club. She also received a fruitcake for her recognition. Friday, January 13, 1961 “We are happy with the success that has been our good fortune to enjoy here at the First National Bank during 1960.” R.W. Curtis, president of the bank reported when glancing back over the last twelve months of operation. Our business has shown a gradual improvement during the 10- year period from 1950 to 1960. During the last five years the bank has made numerous improvements to the building. Included is the installation of year-round air conditioning. For this project the ceiling of the building was lowered, adding greatly to the inside appearance. Eugene Wilcoxson, an employee of the bank since his graduation from high school in 1957, was promoted to the office of assistant cashier on January 10. Other employees of the bank are Mrs. Harvey L. Burns, Mrs. John W. Jamieson, Mrs. Ralph McLeod, Mrs. Douglass Lindsey, and William Frison, custodian.” (See newspaper for complete article.)
