I hope it’s no secret that I’m a grateful man. The reason this column’s title includes “Thank You” is because I know what I have, and that I don’t deserve it.
In an emergency, one of the nicest things to have is money. How much do you need? What will it buy? What kind of money should you save? Where should you hide it?
My mother was a teenager in 1929, when the banks closed, and the Great Depression began. Like many people, her family had been happily making money and spending it as if there was no tomorrow. In one day, the stock market crashed. The next day, there was no money. Her family had money in the bank, but the bank closed and did not reopen. Their money was gone.
With a 34-6 victory over the Lindale Eagles Friday night at Tiger Field, the Tigers pulled the curtain down on the non-district football schedule. The win gave the Tigers a 2-3 record.
AUSTIN — Some 109 independent school districts and charters directly affected by Hurricane Harvey are eligible for special evaluation in this year’s state accountability system, the Texas Education Agency announced Aug. 1.
Based on data reported to the agency during the past school year, the affected districts and charters encompass some 1,188 eligible campuses.
A remodeled and redecorated Williams Hardware Company under management of Bevin Cates has a furniture sale in progress to celebrate the progress that has been going on at the store for the past several weeks. Central air-conditioning has been added in all areas of the departmentalized store. A coat of light yellow paint covers the interior of the building. The north side of the building will be used to display furniture. The sale now in progress will extend through Aug. 17. (See newspaper for complete article.)
Three high school boys will represent Wills Point at the 1968 session of Texas American Legion Boys State, Commander Wayne Rohus of Sam Russell Post No. 303 of the American Legion announced today. Robert Hindman, Buddy Sledge, and Herschel LyBrand will participate in this annual American Legion workshop in the organization and operation of state and local governments. The 1968 Boys State will be in session from June 8 to June 15, at the University of Texas, Austin, Commander Rohus said. (See newspaper for complete article and pictures.)
Ole! Ole! Fiesta time is drawing near. May 3 is the date and Wills Point the place for having fun at the Spring Fiesta. The Chamber of Commerce has announced that they have secured the services of the Alonzo Stanley’s Mariachi Trio, who normally play at Six Flags Over Texas, to appear at the Spring Festival, to be held on the streets of Wills Point, and will wander the streets lending a bit of authenticity to the gala celebration. Mrs. Clyde Wharton and Mrs. Roy Coomer are in charge of the food and concessions. Mrs. G.O. Barrentine is the ticket sales chairman and the publicity chairman is Mrs. Jim Longacre.
March 4 through 8, attention is focused on Texas public schools, as once again it is Public Schools Week in Texas. As parents and citizens, all people in the area are invited to visit the classrooms and see what the teachers and children are doing in the school room. This week-long observance will be highlighted in the local school by open house on Thursday evening, March 7. A chili supper, sponsored by P.T.C. will be held in the cafeteria on the night of open house.
Despite the rain and cold weather last Wednesday a good crowd turned out for the first of the two giant give-away drawings sponsored by the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce and sixty participating members. Thirty people went home with dressed turkeys weighing approximately 10 to 14 pounds each. The next give-away is planned for Saturday, December 9.
Wills Point eighth grade cagers defeated Kaufman in a game here Monday night 60 to 5. Ronnie Travis was high for the game with 12 points, followed by R. Davis and C. Cannefax with 8 each. Following the eighth grade game the two freshman teams battled to a 53-11 victory for the local crew. High scorer was Lybrand with 22 points trailed by Hayden and L.W. Smith with 14 each.
