This Week in Wills Point History Friday, May 3, 1968
Three high school boys will represent Wills Point at the 1968 session of Texas American Legion Boys State, Commander Wayne Rohus of Sam Russell Post No. 303 of the American Legion announced today. Robert Hindman, Buddy Sledge, and Herschel LyBrand will participate in this annual American Legion workshop in the organization and operation of state and local governments. The 1968 Boys State will be in session from June 8 to June 15, at the University of Texas, Austin, Commander Rohus said. (See newspaper for complete article and pictures.)
Final plans continue to shape up for the Fiesta set for tonight. The event is, planned annually by the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce and the money raised is used to improve the Wills Point Improvement Park Association‘s facilities, in the northwest part of town. Committee members have made plans for booths, the hamburger supper sponsored by the Wills Point Rotary Club and various concession stands that will line the streets from the Rose monument to Bruce and Human Drug and around the corner and west past the Wynne and Wynne law office. The Margaret Wynne Garden Club and the Busy Bee Club will contribute pies.
he Tiger-Cat: –Senior Silhouettes, Rose Tarrant is the daughter of Mrs. Freddie L. Cunigan and has been attending school in Wills Point since the first grade. She was a cheerleader as a freshman and sophomore at Cartwright. After graduation Rose, plans to enter business school or get a job.
Emma Tucker is the daughter of the late William Tucker and Mrs. Paralee Tucker. She attended school at Cartwright for 10 years transferring to Wills Point High School for her junior and senior years. She has been a cheerleader and was a member of the F.H.A. serving as president in her sophomore year. (See newspaper for complete article from the Tiger Cat and pictures.)
The Locust Grove Cemetery Association will observe its annual memorial service and homecoming on Sunday May 5. Graves will be decorated prior to worship services. Rev. David W. Morris will be guest speaker. All interested persons and guests are invited to bring a basket lunch and enjoy a day of fellowship.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Erwin were surprised with an unusual “housewarming” on Tuesday evening of last week when sixteen couples showed up at their new home, No. 7 Hidden Valley Road at six o’clock. Their visitors carrying armloads of San Augustine sod, swarmed all over their yard and quicker than you could say, “clobber that gopher” their entire yard was, sodded and ready for the Sunday night rain that soaked Wills Point.
Mrs. Jack McBride and Mrs. Jack Stembridge entertained, the Wills Point Rebekah Lodge with a covered dish supper Monday night, April 15, in the home of Mrs. Stembridge. Attending were Mesdames William Green, Dee Ferrell, A.C. Northcutt, A.T. Venable, Earl Ellis, Raymond Walker, Nellie Jane Smith, and two guests, Mrs. Jerry Carrico and Mrs. Fred Moore.
The weekend of April 27-28 will be one long remembered by 14 year old Mac Payne, and also his proud father, Henry Payne. Mr. Payne and Mac entered the 13th Annual State Bass Fishing Tournament at Lake Rayburn last weekend and came out first place winners in the father-son division. Mr. Payne and Mac caught 58-1/2 pounds of fish and brought home a handsome trophy.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jackson, of Grand Saline, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Roberta Darlyne to Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Lackey. The prospective bridegroom is the son of Mrs. J.P. Hollingsworth, Jr. and the late Paul E. Lackey of Route 4, Wills Point. The bride-elect, is a 1965 graduate of Grand Saline High School, and is at present employed in Edgewood. Mr. Lackey was graduated from Wills Point High School in 1965. He has served two years in the Navy aboard the USS Mauna Loa and is at present returning from duty in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Viet Nam. The wedding date has been set for May 18 in the First Baptist Church, Grand Saline. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the wedding and reception to follow. (See newspaper for picture.)
Mrs. Calvin Fellers, of Wills Point announces the engagement and approaching marriage of her daughter, Margaret Lynn of Bryan to Harlan M. Flatt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris G. Flatt, of Bryan. Miss Fellers is a graduate of Wills Point High School and is presently employed at the City National Bank of Bryan. Mr. Flatt graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School and is employed by Barnes Jersey Farm. The wedding is planned for June 7 at the Northview Baptist Church, Bryan. (See newspaper for picture.)
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lay of East High Street, Terrell are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, May 5. There will be open house from 2 until 5 p.m. A cordial invitation is extended to one and all.
Jeff and Nettie Wilson Greenwood have moved to their new home in Lindale, after selling the farm where they had lived for 30 years in the Alsa community. (See newspaper for complete article and picture.
Mrs. John Allen, a resident of this area for the past 22 years died at Alexander Hospital in Terrell on April 26. Funeral services were held, at First Baptist Church on Sunday April 27, and burial was in White Rose Cemetery. Mrs. Allen was born on June 26, 1885, near Hattiesburg, Mississippi, daughter of the late Sally M. Reagan and Jessie Thomas. Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband John Allen of Wills Point seven stepsons, one stepdaughter, Mrs. George Yarbrough of Seagoville and three nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Thomas King Provence, daughter of a Civil War Confederate army veteran, were held Thursday May 2. Mrs. Provence, former high school teacher, died at her home on Canton Street, in Wills Point Tuesday night.
Buck Howard Norman, 77, died Sunday, April 21. Funeral services were held on April 22 and burial was in High Cemetery. Mr. Norman lived on Route 1, Canton. He is, survived by his wife, Ola, three brothers and one sister, Mrs. J.T. Sewell, of Belton. (See newspaper for names of survivors.)
Personals: Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Weeks accompanied their son, Glyn Weeks and wife to their home at China Lake, California for a visit.
Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Key of Huntsville visited Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Robertson and family and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Campbell Sunday.
