This Week In Wills Point History Friday, Oct. 18, 1968

  With a 34-6 victory over the Lindale Eagles Friday night at Tiger Field, the Tigers pulled the curtain down on the non-district football schedule. The win gave the Tigers a 2-3 record.

   The Tigers open the district schedule tonight hosting the Quitman Bulldogs on Tiger Field. Tonight’s battle will be a renewal of stiff competition between the two elevens. Quitman has amassed a 3-2 record coming into the fracas tonight. Probable offensive starters for Wills Point will be Dale Scott, George Maroney, David Strawn, and Robert Hindman, tackles; Mike Lindsey and Kenneth Bates or Ricky Roberts, guards; John Deen, center; Herschel Lybrand, quarterback; Henry Hallman, left halfback; Mike Goggans, slot back, and Calvin Cunigan, fullback. Game time is 8:00 p.m. Tickets will be on sale at the usual places downtown and at the school.

   The 1968 Wills Point United Funds Drive will get under way with the kickoff at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22. Workers will gather at the Chamber of Commerce office for last minute instructions, and materials for the drive.

   State Representative Bill Bass of Martins Mill was principal speaker at the annual 4-H banquet held in Athens on October 7. County Judge-elect Billy Don Hullum presented medals and certificates. Friends of 4-H awards were, presented to Mr. and Mrs. Aude McWilliams by Mrs. W.W. Goode of the Board-Elwood 4-H Club. Mrs. Thurman Bullard and Mrs. W.W. Goode received pins for five years of service to 4-H. Mr. Bass presented gold star awards to Paul Terrell and Nancy Mallory. Thomas and Stephen Goode were among the boys receiving awards.

  Men, Women In Service - Gv/Sgt. Glenn Hill is visiting his mother, Mrs. E.L. Courtney, for a month before going to Vietnam for a tour of duty.

  Pvt. Larry Brewer recently finished basic training in the Army Medical Corps at Fort Bliss. Larry writes that he likes the army and plans to make a career of it. After a visit with his grandmother, Mrs. L.M. Brewer of Garland and his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Foster, he will be stationed at Fort Sam Houston.

  Sgt. Bobby Cannefax, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Cannefax, arrived home Saturday after being discharged from the armed forces recently at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Sgt. Cannefax spent the past 17 months of his two years in uniform in Germany.

   Marine Private First Class Danny M. Welch, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Welch of Wills Point is serving with the First Marine Division in South Vietnam. As a member of the division, he helps capture or destroy enemy forces. During large and small scale, operations, he is, supported by Marine air units, tanks, artillery, amphibian tractors, and engineers. His unit is also engaged in a civic action program designed to assist the Vietnamese people in completing self-help projects, such as the building of wells, culverts, small bridges, and schools. Equipment and materials are made available through the Marine Corps Reserve Civic Action Fund.

   THE TIGER-CAT, edited by the journalism department of Wills Point High School - Senior Silhouettes - Glenda Sue Shelby, a blue-eyed brunette comes from a family of four sisters. After studying homemaking for three years, her talents are outstanding in cooking and sewing. Sue plans to either go to a beauty school or work in a business office after graduation. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jesse L. Shelby.

  James Wilson enjoys hunting, and playing basketball. He has been going to Wills Point Public School since he was in the seventh grade. Upon graduation, James plans to join the Navy. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Virgil M. Wilson of Myrtle Springs. (See newspaper for complete articles and pictures.)

   J.V. White has leased the Texaco service station on Interstate 20 at the intersection of Hayden Road.

   Miss Willene Woolverton, daughter of Mrs. Lorean Armstrong and the late William Woolverton, was united in marriage on Sept. 20 to Pvt. Richard Roberts in a ceremony performed at Camp Rucker, Alabama, by Chaplain R.D. Daniell. Pvt. Roberts’ parents are Mr. and Mrs. W.B. (Bob) Roberts, Wills Point. The newly-weds, are both graduates of Wills Point High School. Pvt. Roberts received basic training at Fort Polk, La., before going to his Alabama assignment. The bride’s mother and stepfather attended the wedding. Mrs. Roberts is presently making her home with her mother.

   Miss Dian Hughes became the bride of Donnie Parker in a double- ring ceremony performed on Friday evening, Sept. 27, at the Elwood Baptist Church with Rev. Cloyce Miller officiating, The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Hughes of Wills Point and the groom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Barkley Parker of Edgewood. Miss Helen Samford was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Misses Connie Cooksey and Diane Parker, sister of the groom. Miss Ginger Rogers was flower girl. Sammy Jones of Grand Saline was best man.    The recently organized Jessie Miller Foster Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy met in regular session Tuesday, October 8, in the assembly room of the courthouse. Mrs. W.F. Brown, organizing president was in charge of the meeting. Mrs. Jack Johnson was appointed program chairman for November. Mrs. Virginia Turner was elected recorder and Mrs. Logan Craft, assistant reporter. (See newspaper for complete article.)

   Sammie Alvis Crocker, 53, former resident of Wills Point died in Dallas on Oct. 7. He was a native of Alabama. Services were held in Dallas, with burial in Restland Memorial Park. He is, survived by his wife, Frances; one son Douglas Crocker, a brother; and four sisters. (See newspaper for complete obituary.)

   Gary Dale Combs, 17 year-old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Combs of Wills Point died in a Wednesday morning one-car accident two miles south of Interstate 20 on road 34 near Terrell. Gary Dale was born on May 17, 1951, in Mena, Arkansas. He is, survived by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and his grandmother, Mrs. Ada Combs, Watson, Oklahoma.   Clarence R. Cavin, 70, father of Ed Cavin of Wills Point died in an Abilene hospital Sunday. Funeral services were held in Sweetwater and burial was in the Sweetwater Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Cavin and Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Rohus Jr. attended the funeral service. (See newspaper for complete obituary.)
