The Wills Point City Council officially got to close the books on its 2016 election Tuesday night, cancelling election activities after candidate filing ended with only incumbents Mike Jones and Wade Emerson returning paperwork.
The move to cancel the election had been a mere formality for the past month, following an uneventful filing period that began Jan. 20 and ran through Feb. 19.
With the cancellation, both Jones and Emerson will each be sworn in for another two-year term at the May council meeting.
A lengthy portion of guardrail was uprooted along FM 47 North near VZCR 2475 around 1 p.m. March 5. A Chevrolet pickup truck hauling a trailer drifted off the roadway and collided with the railing while traveling south towards Wills Point. Officers from the Wills Point Police Department, members of the DPS, Champion EMS and the Wills Point Fire Department all arrived on the scene to assess the damage, divert traffic, and render aid to the driver of the damaged truck. The driver, who was not yet identified as of press time, was taken via ambulance from scene to a Tyler area hospital where he was evaluated and eventually released. Preliminary results indicate that speed was likely major factor, although the DPS investigation of the accident is still ongoing.
