VZC Aggie Muster set

The 2016 Aggie Muster for the Van Zandt County A&M Club will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, at the Farm Bureau in Canton.

The guest speaker will be Jeff Tarpley with 247 Sports.

Dinner will be $14.

Aggie Muster is a time honored tradition at Texas A&M University.

Bluebird Festival to host blood drive

Wills Point Bluebird Festival is hosting a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Community Center located at High St. and FM 47 in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Karen Samples at 214-534-8990.

 All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation, and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood.

Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood.

Hall hosting electricity grid summit

Sen. Bob Hall is hosting Texas Gird Security Summit April 28 and 29 in Austin.

Hall is inviting the public to attend the event and “hear from state and national experts as they address critical security concerns from high-impact threats that could cause a nationwide critical infrastructure collapse for a month or more.”

“This summit will address the Texas electric grid’s vulnerability to electromagnetic pulse, geomagnetic solar storms and the interplay of cyber-attacks; discuss emergency preparedness and emerging protective technologies; and highlight state and federal legislative EMP protection and electric grid security efforts,” according to information from Hall’s office.

Free watershed workshop set for May 6

A Texas Watershed Steward workshop on water quality and water management related to Lake Tawakoni, Lake Fork, and other area watersheds will be held from 8 a.m. noon May 6 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office for Rains County.

The office is located at 410 Tawakoni Dr., also known as Hwy. 276, in Emory.

The workshop will be presented by AgriLife Extension and the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board.

Superintendent discusses district happenings

The Wills Point ISD has put plenty on its plate as the 2015-’16 school year continues to edge towards the finish line.

The district has hired four news principals, (not counting Jeff Smith, who began as the new high school principal April 4), and will look to put a tax swap on the ballot for voters.

The district also plans asses the facility needs of the district moving forward into the future.

SkillsUSA students participate at State Competition

Members of the WPHS SkillsUSA team, including Emma Adkins, Jordan Adriaenssens, Megan Bennett, Grace Felan, Jordan Graham, Harley Hall, Trace Hall, Austin Morrow, Ian Simpson, Shelbi Walser, Mackenzie Warren and Katelyn Watson, competed at the State USASkills Competition in Corpus Christi last week.

The Wills Point High School’s SkillsUSA program has been a force to be reckoned with in recent years, bringing home awards and honors annually. News for the program became even brighter last week, after local SkillsUSA students placed at State Competition.

Harley Hall received a silver medal for Prepared Speech and Grace Felan received a bronze medal for Graphic Imaging Sublimation. Both students were part of a team of 12 students that went to the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference.

This year the competition was the largest in history with over 6,000 students from across the state traveling to Corpus Christi.

Reynolds promoted to head basketball coaching position

Athletic Director Greg Cranfill, right, announced last week that Jonne Reynolds has been promoted to fill the head basketball coach position. Reynolds has been with the district for the past six years, serving as an assistant to departing coach Jimmy Wallace for the past four years.

The Wills Point HS athletic department has announced two key changes to its coaching lineup for the 2016-’17 school year, including the departure of longtime basketball coach Jimmy Wallace and the promotion of top assistant Jonne Reynolds to take his place.

Athletic director Greg Cranfill explained the move, stating, “Coach Wallace has been transparent through all of this, that he was trying to move closer to his kids and family. I supported him 100 percent because of those things.”

Charity golf tournament set

Wills Point Rotary Club is holding the fifth annual All "FORE!" Kids Charity Golf Tournament April 22 at the Van Zandt Country Club!

Shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m.  Format is a four person scramble.  Entry is $100 per player or $400 per team.  The fee includes green fee, cart, lunch and goody bag.

Confederate soldiers to be honored

The Jesse Miller Foster Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will be honoring the Confederate soldiers buried in the Old Northside Cemetery in Edgewood on April 16, 2016.  The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in the Edgewood Heritage Room at 105 North Houston Street.
