City council cancels election

Members of the city council, Mayor Mark Turner, Mike Jones, Oscar Rogers, Kyle Anderson, Wade Emerson and Lance LyBrand, welcomed the expansion of Brazos Trailers to the Wills Point Business Park.

The Wills Point City Council officially got to close the books on its 2016 election Tuesday night, cancelling election activities after candidate filing ended with only incumbents Mike Jones and Wade Emerson returning paperwork.

The move to cancel the election had been a mere formality for the past month, following an uneventful filing period that began Jan. 20 and ran through Feb. 19.

With the cancellation, both Jones and Emerson will each be sworn in for another two-year term at the May council meeting.

City leaders also tackled several other topics, holding public recognition for the accomplishments of current or newly hired employees and welcoming the expansion of Brazos Trailers, LLC into the Wills Point Business Park.

Councilmembers welcomed two new employees, public works employee Chase Sullivan and police officer Bernardo Garza. Additionally, public works employees Miguel Cepeda and Charles Jones were each recognized for receiving additional licensing.

After a brief executive session to discuss “Project 16A” at the Wills Point Business Park, council members reconvened, approved and explained the item.

City Administrator Pam Pearson stated, “I’m sure most of you have seen and know Chris and Nathan (Bullard). They’ve had trailers for sale at the corner of Highway 64 and 80. We are pleased and proud to welcome Brazos Trailers to the Business Park.”

The Bullards addressed the council following the vote, reading a brief statement thanking the council and Pearson. “We’d like to thank you all for the opportunity and we are looking forward to the expansion of our business. We’ve been really growing at a rapid rate the last year and a half, two years and we’re looking forward to it. I’d just like to comment on the EDC of Wills Point. It’s been a pleasure working with them. They’ve been very helpful, especially Mrs. Pearson. I’ve enjoyed all of our conversations and it’s been a pleasure. We look forward to it and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of you all here in the near future.”
