Van Zandt County County Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help in solving two recent theft cases.
Two businesses on 1-20 were burglarized May 31.
A large Lincoln, gas-powered welder, DeWalt cut off saw with an Evolution blade, a Victor cutting torch, balck truck tool box full of tools and several log chains were taken from LaPrade Steel.
The company is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons that broke into their facility located at I-20 and FM 17 during the early morning hours May 31
Local law enforcement officials at both the city and county level have turned to social media more and more over the course of the past year, using resources such as Facebook to keep the public informed about local happenings.
That trend continued May 26, with the WPPD publishing a list of all current outstanding warrants for all Class C violations coming out of the WP Municipal Court that has since been shared nearly 200 times.
Several weeks ago the Wills Point Chronicle published a letter to the editor about the dairy business. The letter, sent in time for Mother’s Day, talked about the bond between newborn calves and their mothers. It suggested that dairy cows spend their lives on a concrete floor, chained with no outdoor access and that cows were artificially impregnated and so on.
Shortly after the letter published, I received an email from former Van Zandt County Extension Agent Brian Cummins asking if I would like to tour one of our local dairies to gain a better understanding of the reality of our local dairy production vs. the perception outlined in the letter.
Crime Stoppers is hoping to help locate a 2013 Mule 600, which was stolen May 30 off VZCR 2901.

“If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of this item and/or who stole it, we need to hear from you,” said Crime Stoppers President Kathy Sith. “You can call our anonymous tip line any time day or night.”
As spring turns into summer time, the Myrtle Springs Water Supply Corporation is asking its customers “to be mindful of meter boxes.”
“Please keep them and the area around them mowed and weed-eated to make meter reading time more efficient and safe for our operators,” the corporation said. “If your box tends to have ants, please sprinkle some ant poison out. Please be cautious around meter boxes, they make good homes for snakes and bees.”
If the meter box is missing its lid or the lid is damaged, customers are asked to contact the water office for repair or replacement.
AARP Driver Safety Program and the Van Zandt County Library at 317 First Monday Ln. in Canton are sponsoring a driver safety class from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 7.
This course is designed for drivers 50 years of age and older primarily.
The course helps you learn to compensate for the effects of passing years have on eyesight, hearing and reflexes. Most participants will qualify for insurance premium reductions of up to ten percent off their policy cost for the next three years.
Cost for the class is a nominal fee for materials only, organizers said.

Turner Baptist Church is inviting all children of the Wills Point area to join them for SonWest Roundup VBS.
The church is hosting a Western Round Up party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday June 4. The event will include the Pistoleros (gunfight re-enactors, a water slide, bounce house, pony rides, wagon rides and food.
It will be a peek at what VBS will be like, organizers said.
VBS is set from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 6 through 10.
The WP Police Department took to social media last week, publishing a list of all current outstanding warrants coming out of the Wills Point Municipal Court for Class C violations.
The post, published on the department's Facebook page May 26 and shared more than 180 times as of press time, reads:
