Lindale rallies for 12-8 win over Wills Point

Senior third baseman Meredith Edwards slides safely into second base during the middle innings against the Lindale Eagles March 7.

The Wills Point Lady Tigers crammed a season's worth of ups and downs into one game on Tuesday night, building up a seemingly insermountable lead only to watch Lindale mount a furious comeback that ultimately culminated in a 12-8 loss.

After getting three quick outs against Lindale in the top of the first inning, Wills Point wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard during their first opportunity at bat.

Alexis Mosley began the inning with a single to left, followed by a single to center by Meredith Edwards.

A misplayed groundball by the Lindale defense helped to load the bases, and a similar scenario on a Dee Donaldson grounder helped to produce the first run of the game for the Lady Tigers.

Jeslyn Martinez picked up an RBI by beating out a bunt single, followed by a an RBI sacrifice fly from Harley Sieber, an RBI double from Hailey Hoover and an RBI on a bunt by Olivia McMath.

Tigers open 2017 baseball season

The Wills Point Tigers kicked off another baseball season at the Farmersville Tournament Feb. 23-25, looking to match and possibly even exceed the bi-district title the program captured during the 2016 season.

Wills Point struggled offensively throughout most of the tournament, getting held to one run in each of their first three outings before breaking through to finish the tournament with a 1-4 record overall.

The Tigers clashed with Paris North Lamar Feb. 23, registering just two hits over five innings in a 9-1 loss. Chuck Smith and Seth Wilson picked up the lone hits for the Tigers, while Sam Berberich finished with the lone RBI in the contest.

Errors proved costly for the Tigers in their second game of the tournament with three miscues paving the way for a 4-1 Farmersville win.

Lady Tigers play six in three days

The Wills Point Lady Tiger softball team was scheduled to compete in their second tournament of the 2017 season beginning Feb. 23 in Big Sandy. The next Wills Point home game will be March 7 against Lindale.

The Wills Point Lady Tigers wasted little time in getting a jump on their 2017 season, taking to the field six times over a three-day stretch with games at the Sulphur Springs Tournament sandwiched around a home date against Quinlan.

The Lady Tigers began play at the Sulphur Springs Tournament Feb. 16 with a contest against Caddo Mills. Defensive miscues and solid Caddo Mills hitting proved to be less than ideal for the Lady Tigers in a 15-2, four-inning loss.

Wills Point finished with just three hits in the contest, getting singles from Hailey Hoover, Dee Donaldson and Alexis Mosley. MacKenzie Bolt registered the lone RBI for the Lady Tigers with a second-inning sacrifice against the Lady Foxes.

Wills Point kept things more competitive in their second game of the tournament, dropping a 9-7 decision to Omaha Paul-Pewitt. Errors were once again a key storyline with three Wills Point errors leading to six unearned runs.

Season ends in bi-district round loss

The Wills Point Tigers faced a tough task during the bi-district round of the playoffs. After finishing as the third seed out of District 13-4A play, the Tigers were paired with a talented Pleasant Grove Hawks team that finished as the runner-up in District 14-4A play.

Wills Point put together a gutty effort, overcoming a turnover prone first half to come up just short in a 58-49 loss to Pleasant Grove.

Things went well for Wills Point in the early stages of the first quarter with the Tigers grabbing a 6-0 lead on the Hawks. Pleasant Grove proceeded to go on a run of their own, answering the Tiger challenge to pull ahead 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hawks maintained the positive momentum throughout the second quarter, extending their advantage by outscoring the Tigers 16-9 to lead 34-22 entering the half.
