KornPop visits VZC Library

Kornpop the Clown entertained the record number of Summer Readers at Van Zandt County Library this week. Summer Reading is held each Friday morning at 10 a.m. through July 21 at 317 First Monday Lane.

Trailblazer science exhibit to visit library

The Trailblazer traveling science exhibit will be at the Van Zandt County library, 317 First Monday Lane, Canton, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 12.

Trailblazer is a traveling science exhibit filled with hands-on activities centered on energy, aerodynamics, space science, weather and biotechnology. It is suitable for all ages. The Trailblazer engages students in interactive projects in science and creates awareness of careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

This program is a collaboration between the Van Zandt County Library, the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering, and the Tocker Foundation.

VZC Library Summer Reading kicks off Article submitted by VZC Library

“Put on your pith helmet (safari hat) and come to the Van Zandt County Library for the fifth Summer Reading program, Zoofari. Every child who loves animals will enjoy this outing. We will disembark at 10 a.m., Friday, July 7. Lots of smiles have been spotted as kids and parents leave Summer Reading – especially those who were the lucky winners of door prizes!

The Van Zandt County Genealogy Society will sponsor a workshop on Saturday, July 8 in the Buchanan Room of the Van Zandt County Library. Call the library at 903-567-5012 for more information and to register.

Region IV Child Welfare Board award recipients named

Outstanding Community Resource award winner, Van Zandt County Commissioners Court

Region IV Child Welfare Board had their annual awards luncheon June 9 in Pittsburg. There are 23 counties in Region IV, each county submits their winners to be considered for the Region award. Region award winners are then sent to State to be considered for the State Award.

Sandy Hilliard, president of region IV, presented the awards. Van Zandt County had three winners for the region.

Cary Hilliard, Veterans Memorial board member, Josh Wilkerson, President of EPIC Industrial, Ron Carrol, Director of Veterans Memorial and Gary Walker, Vice President of EPIC Industrial were presented with a signed photo of the memorial jet in gratitude for their generous support of the Veterans Memorial.

Genealogical Society to hold workshop

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society will hold a genealogy workshop from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 8, in the Buchanan Room of the county library. The library is located at 317 First Monday Lane (Hwy 859) in Canton.  The cost is $10 and includes a light lunch and snacks. 

Society members will present several topics including charts and records, census, cemeteries, courthouse research, internet research and lineage society information to aid in genealogical research.

4-H Salute to Excellence honors Van Zandt County leader

Dr. Doug Steele, Director, Texas A&M AgriLife, Carolyn Davis, honoree, and Melisa Rhodes, Van Zandt County Extension Agent.

The 2017 Texas 4-H State Roundup, the Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas 4-H honored  leaders and volunteers during the Salute to Excellence Banquet.  Those honored were nominated from across the state for their outstanding contribution to Texas 4-H. They live by the 4-H motto “Make the best better” a reality.

Carolyn Albert Davis was nominated for the Salute to Excellence award by Van Zandt County Extension Agent Melisa Rhodes in recognition of her dedication, commitment and impact in the lives of 4-H youths and their families.

Culinary herbs topic of program at VZC Library

Which is it "herb" or "erb"? Find out during the Van Zandt Library series "Culinary Herbs in your Garden and Diet" at 10 a.m.  June 15.

The presentation will focus on the top common culinary herbs, how to grow them and how they can be incorporated into a diet. Discover fun facts about these and other herbs that are edible and tasty. Techniques for preserving your favorite herbs will be discussed and recipes shared.

Swinging into summer at the VZC Library

The Van Zandt County Library is back in full swing for the summer. The new shelves have been installed and the air is electric with all the excitement.

The Summer Reading Program will kick off about all things electric.

Trinity Valley Electric Co-op, who has provided a grant to fund the Summer Reading programs, will present this very interesting program. Life without electricity is hard to imagine. The presenters will cover the wise and safe use of this power; and there will be some pretty nifty demonstrations!
