Election filing to open January 16
Prospective candidates interested in serving on either the Wills Point City Council or Wills Point ISD Board of Trustees will soon have the opportunity to do so with another election filing period looming just over the horizon.
Election filing for both the city and school is scheduled to get underway beginning January 16, and run through February 15. Positions up for election include four spots on the Wills Point City Council and three places on the Wills Point ISD Board of Trustees.
City Council
The city of Wills Point will enter the 2019 riding a surprising streak, avoiding the specter of having to hold an election with only incumbents filing for new two-year terms in each of the past three prospective election cycles.
Four seats, currently held by Mayor Mark Turner, Kyle Anderson, and Oscar Rogers, and the vacant position previously occupied by Lance LyBrand (LyBrand resigned in May after moving outside of the city limits), will all be up for election on the May 4 ballot. Each city council seat will be for a two-year term beginning in May 2018.
Candidate packets for a seat on the council can be picked up at the Wills Point City Hall building located at 120 N. 5th St. during regular business hours once filing begins Jan. 16.
According to the Secretary of State’s office, to be eligible to run for a council seat, a person must have been a resident of Texas for one year and a resident of Wills Point for six months prior to the filing date. They must also be 18 years of age and be a registered voter at the time of the election.
School Board
Candidate filing for three places, currently held by board president George Wilcoxson, board vice president Chuck Allen and board secretary Russell Hiler, will be on the ballot for the May 4 election. All three places up for election will be for a three-year term.
Allen currently holds the distinction of being the longest tenured board member, first winning election in 2013.
Candidate packets for a seat on the board of trustees can be picked up at the Wills Point ISD Administration Office located at 338 W. N. Commerce St. during regular business hours once the filing period begins Jan. 16.
To be eligible to run for a school board position in Texas, a person must have been a resident of the state for one year and a resident of the district he or she wishes to serve in for six months prior to the filing deadline.
Additional requirements include that the person must be 18 years of age and a registered voter at the time of the election.
Voting
Local election day is May 4. A person is eligible to vote if they are a United States citizen; are a resident of the county where they submit their voting application, are at least 18 years old on election day, are not a convicted felon and have not been declared mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated. Some felons may be eligible to vote if they have completed their sentences, probation or parole.
