Lady Tigers to play in Edgewood

The Wills Point Lady Tigers reached the tournament play portion of their schedule last week, hitting the court four times overall during their home event Nov. 29-Dec. 1. The Lady Tigers went 1-3 overall, topping Community while suffering losses to Forney, Life Waxahachie and Kaufman during the three-day event.
Wills Point opened play with a talented opponent, taking on the Forney Jackrabbits Nov. 29 in an afternoon contest. Forney would prevail in the contest, limiting Wills Point offensively to secure a 40-22 win.
Forney got all the points they would need in the first half, taking leads of 13-3 after one quarter and 21-9 by the end of the second. Wills Point came out cold following the break scoring just two points in the third before exploding for 11 in the fourth to cut the final margin down to 18.
Leading scorers for Wills Point included Kinley Collins with 10, Addison Prather with seven, Hailey Hoover with three and Angelina Fields and Dawn Smith with one each.
The Lady Tigers got back on track Nov. 30, getting their only win of the tournament with a 52-47 triumph over Community.
Wills Point set the pace in the first half, outscoring the Braves by three in the first quarter and six in the second to take a 30-21 lead into halftime. The Lady Tigers kept Community at a distance throughout the rest of the game, closing out the five-point win.
Leading scorers for Wills Point included Hailey Hoover with 20, Angelina Fields with nine, Kinley Collins with seven, Addison Prather with six, Melanie Sullivan with four, Kirsten Hatten with two and Kyan Collins and Dawn Smith with one each.
The Lady Tigers tangled with Life Waxahachie with their final game of pool play Nov. 30, surrendering a double-digit second half lead to fall 51-50.
Timely three-point shooting carried Wills Point throughout the first half as seven makes from long distance helped the Lady Tigers establish a 28-18 lead entering the half. Life Waxahachie began relying on its superior height on the interior in the third and fourth quarters, keeping multiple chances alive with their offensive rebounding to edge past the Lady Tigers down the stretch.
Wills Point had one final opportunity to pull even with Life, settling for a late layup instead of a three-pointer to cut the final score down to 51-50 with time expiring.
Angelina Fields led all Wills Point players with 12, followed by Hailey Hoover with 10, Addison Prather with nine, Marissa Fields and Kinley Collins with eight each, Melanie Sullivan with two and Dawn Smith with one.
The Lady Tigers wrapped up tournament play on a down note, falling to Kaufman in their tournament finale Dec. 1. Game stats for the contest between the Lady Tigers and Lady Lions were not immediately available as of press time.
Wills Point is scheduled to stay close to home Dec. 6-8, making the short trip to Edgewood to compete in the Lady Dogs annual tournament. Participating teams for the three-day event are set to include Caddo Mills, Canton, Longview, Scurry-Rosser and North Forney playing competing in Pool A and Wills Point, event host Edgewood, Gilmer, Kaufman and Sulphur Springs competing in Pool B.
The Lady Tigers were scheduled to play Sulphur Springs at 8 a.m. and Kaufman at 8 p.m. Dec. 6 before taking on Gilmer at 10:40 a.m. and Edgewood at 4 p.m. today (Dec. 7). Pool play will wrap up early Dec. 8 before the start of games to determine the final finish of competing schools later that afternoon.
The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Anna Dec. 11 before hitting the road for games against Community Dec. 14 and Grand Saline Dec. 21.
