Local veterans joined members of the Wills Point Rotary Club member at their weekly luncheon Nov. 15, sharing stories of their service and sacrifice with Rotarians.

The Wills Point chapter of Rotary International continued to live its motto of Service Above Self last week, welcoming veterans to their weekly meeting Nov. 15 for a free lunch. The assembled veterans were each individually recognized following completion of their meal as each shared a story or anecdote about their time in uniform.

Rotarians and the Rotary Club have a nearly 80-year history in the Wills Point area, tackling a series of service projects each year.

The club has donated thousands of dollars over the years to efforts including donations to Head-Start, giving dictionaries to third grade students, distributing box fans and smoke detectors to the less fortunate, replacing and purchasing trashcans downtown, and paying for eye-glasses for WPISD students in need.

Donations have also gone towards annual scholarships, as well as Felix Massey Education Grants to teachers and instructors within the WPISD. Grants have been used to benefit reading programs at the intermediate school, a drill press for the high school shop class, math applications for the middle school math department, listening and reading programs for beginning readers at the primary school, an educational DVD series at the junior high, among other efforts.

Additionally, Rotarians oversee the upkeep and maintenance of the playground at Lester Park. Information on the Wills Point chapter and their upcoming events and projects can be found by visiting www.willspointrotary.com.
