Tigers tame Mustangs for 41-28 win

The Wills Point Tigers celebrated Homecoming night on a winning note Oct. 13, forcing three Dallas Roosevelt turnovers en route to a 41-28 win over the Mustangs.

Roosevelt began play against Wills Point on offense, picking up a minimal gain on first down befoe being pushed back on a five-yard penalty. Facing a second down and 14 to go situation, the Mustangs attempted a pass across the middle that was intercepted by senior linebacker Bryan Mitchell at the 36-yard line. Mitchell proceeded to weave his way through Mustang players, reaching the end zone to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Aidan Phillips added the PAT, extending the Tiger lead to 7-0 with 9:54 to play in the opening quarter.

Roosevelt fared slightly better on its second drive, picking up two first downs to reach midfield before being forced to punt the ball back to the Tigers.

After a 26-yard punt return by Brandon Smith, Wills Point opened play offensively with a pair of Vernon Morrow rushes to pick up a first down. After two quick penalties, Wills point marched forward once again by picking up four yards on a rush by Smith and another four yards on a completion from Tyler James to Nathan Johnson.

Facing a third down at the Roosevelt 39-yard line, Brandon Smith broke through the Mustang defense for a touchdown to extend the Tiger advantage. Aidan Phillips knocked home his second PAT attempt of the first quarter to give Wills Point a 14-0 lead with 3:31 to play in the quarter.
