Tiger Band begins contest season
The Wills Point Tiger Band hit the marching contest season with a vengeance over a seven day stretch beginning Oct. 7, marching in Mesquite, Sunnyvale, Mineola and Princeton with their new show entitled “Dia de los Muertos.”
Tiger Band director John Young noted, “Musically it is one of my favorite productions that we have done. It requires great technique from the woodwinds, brass and percussion. Visually our guard under the direction of Nathan Ascano has been amazing. They have progressed to another level this year visually and have a very technically demanding show."
The work put in by Tiger Band members and directors was immediately evident this year with the band being named Best in Class among all 4A bands at the Mesquite Marching Contest Oct. 7 after finishing 9th overall out of 27 bands that prominently included 5A and 6A schools. Additionally, the Tiger Band was recognized with three additional honors: Outstanding Winds, Outstanding Guard and Outstanding Visual.
The Tiger Band participated in a second contest Oct. 7, performing at the Sunnyvale Invitational. Wills Point was once again named Best in Class among 4A bands, finishing second overall out of 25 bands.
The Tiger Band was recognized by event judges for having the Outstanding Guard, Outstanding Drum Majors, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Visual and Outstanding Winds.
Wills Point made its way to the Mineola Marching Contest just two days later, earning their third consecutive Best in Class recognition after placing second overall out of 28 bands.
Students and band directors wrapped their busiest stretch of the year Oct. 14, competing at the Princeton Sounds of Fall Contest. Wills Point finished 10th overall at the event in a crowded field that included 34 other bands from around the area.
