Tigers set to begin District 6-4A play

The chase for a spot in this year's 4A UIL Football State Playoffs officially gets underway this week for District 6-4A teams with Wills Point, Canton, Dallas Lincoln, Dallas Roosevelt, Emory Rains and Ferris all set to begin play against one another beginning Oct. 13.

District openers are scheduled to include Wills Point hosting Dallas Roosevelt for Homecoming, Canton hosting Ferris, and Rains hosting Dallas Lincoln.

Roosevelt, which finished 2016 with a 2-8 record overall, enters its matchup with Wills Point after a 2-3 start to open the 2017 season.

Roosevelt opened the season at home Sept. 1, falling 41-20 to Spruce. The Mustangs lost to 29-15 to Dallas Madison the following week before pulling out a 30-27 win over North Dallas Sept. 15 and a 42-0 shutout win over Pinkston Sept. 22. Wilmer-Hutchins recorded a decisive victory over the Mustangs ahead of the bye week, scoring a 41-6 win over Roosevelt Sept. 29.

Through five games this season, the Mustangs have averaged 22.6 points per game while allowing an average of 27.6 points per game.

Wills Point finished non-district play with a 1-4 record overall, including season-opening losses to Chapel Hill, Carrollton Ranchview, Mineola and Tatum before breaking the string with a win over Hillsboro to close out the month of September.

Sept. 1 vs. Chapel Hill

The Wills Point Tigers returned to the field Sept. 1 looking to continue the momentum of a 2016 season that saw the program go undefeated during district play before claiming the program’s first bi-district title since the 2004 season.

Despite being outgained by the Tigers in total yardage (456-400) and first downs (27-17), the Bulldogs played the role of spoiler on the season’s first night by recording a 48-37 victory.

Brandon Smith finished as Wills Point's leading rusher with 13 carries for 156 yards and 3 TDs, followed by Vernon Morrow with 13 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown and Klayton Spencer with eight carries for 54 yards and a score.

Defensively, four Tigers finished with double-digit tackle nights including Josh Davis with 14, Brandon Smith and Ben Bradshaw with 13 each and Klayton Spencer with 10.

Aidan Phillips, serving in his first game as Wills Point's kicker, finished 3/4 on point after touchdown attempts.
