Pruitt speaks at VZCGS meeting

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society held its monthly meeting Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Buchanan Room of the County Library.

Guest speaker Zeffie Pruitt presented a very interesting and informative program on the “Meaning of Kwanzaa,” said Society members.

Pruitt explained that “Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday celebration created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga to celebrate African heritage, unity and culture. It begins Dec. 26 and ends Jan. 1 with a day of feast and gift giving. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase meaning “first fruits of the harvest.” Each day of the holiday is dedicated to one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, which are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. It is a time of thanksgiving and reflection on ancestry, tradition and family values,”

Pruitt has studied and practiced Kwanzaa with her family and friends for over 20 years and enjoys the ability to teach others about this tradition, said Society members.

The next meeting of the Genealogical Society will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at the VZC Library.
