Jail generator, insurance dominate meeting
Replacing a generator at the Van Zandt County Jail and supplemental insurance for county employees were two main topics of discussion June 13 during a two-hour regular session of the VZC Commissioners Court.
Commissioners discussed foregoing the bidding process or proposals for the purchase and installation of a new generator for the Van Zandt County Jail.
The old generator at the jail was damaged by lightning during the April 29 tornadoes and the jail is currently operating with a generator borrowed from the city of Tyler.
“We have filed a claim with the Texas Association of Counties,” pointed out VZC Auditor Freddy Thomas. “They are paying on that claim. On May 25, we ordered a new generator through Agape Electric in Canton. Delivery was estimated at 10 weeks. Due to a public calamity and unforeseen damage to public machinery and equipment, I advised the court through an e-mail that we should forego the bidding process and return the generator that we borrowed from Tyler. We need to return the borrowed generator to the Tyler Fire Department by the end of June. We are still up in the air about what to do for the next month. The estimated date of delivery from Agape Electric is July 27.”
