The Wills Point Tigers officially put an end to their regular season this week, hosting Mabank Feb. 10 and traveling to Van Feb. 14 for their final two district contests of the 2016-’17 season.
Wills Point, which finishes the year as the three-seed coming out of District 13-4A play, entered the game against the Panthers with an outside chance of finishing as the two-seed. Unfortunately for the Tigers, a poor second quarter would spell doom for the home team in a 53-44 loss.
The Tigers controlled play in the early going, holding a 16-9 advantage until late in the first quarter. A three-pointer from Mabank’s Jace Capehart in the corner just before the buzzer helped to give the Panthers momentum and cut the Tiger lead to just four points entering the second quarter.
Wills Point struggled throughout the second frame on the offensive side of the court, hitting just one field goal over and eight minute stretch as Mabank turned a small deficit into a 21-19 lead entering the half.
