Funeral services for Sylvia Jo Sims, 81, of Edgewood were held Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Edgewood under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home.  Burial followed at Haven of Memories in Canton.

Sylvia Jo Jackson, lovingly known as Sib by her friends and Mamaw to her grandkids, was born on Oct. 5, 1935, in Fruitvale to Luther Jackson and Cora Foster. She was raised in Edgewood and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1953.

She married Garnell Sims, Aug. 28, 1953. They lived in Edgewood until 1959 when they moved to Mesquite. She worked for Eller Media as a paint services manager. She retired in 1998 after 30 exemplary years.

After retirement, she and Garnell returned to their hometown of Edgewood to live in the peace and quiet of the country. She was a charter member of Edgemont Park Baptist Church in Mesquite and proud member of First Baptist Church in Edgewood. She actively served the Lord by singing in the choir and volunteering in the church library.

She lived a life full of passions including gardening, quilting, and sewing. She enjoyed the company of her life-long friends, playing dominoes, traveling the country, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Luther Jackson and Cora Jackson-Jarrett, and stepfather Clyde Jarrett; three sisters, Orella Mae Sanchez, Anna Ruth “Tootsie” Pierce and brother-in-law, J.P. Pierce, and Doris Everett and brother-in-law, Beaver Everett.

Survivors include her husband, Garnell Sims of Edgewood; son, Garland Sims of Edgewood; daughter, Kendra Docktor and husband, John of Bedford; brother, James Jackson of North Carolina; brother and sister-in-law, Billy Ray and Loretta Sims of Edgewood; sisters-in-law, Durene Sims and Jeanette McCord, both of Edgewood; grandson, Ryan Sims and wife, Ashley of Edgewood; granddaughter Cortney Easley and husband, Brian of Canton; grandson, Dustin Docktor of Bedford; six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Edgewood to help pay for their weekly flower arrangements so that the beauty of life may be shared with everyone who comes to worship the Lord.
