Tigers swat Eagles, fall to Panthers
The Wills Point Tigers took to the court twice over the past week, finishing 1-1 overall with a 12-point road win over the Canton Eagles and a 22-point loss to the Mabank Panthers.
Wills Point and Canton met for the first time during the 2016-’17 season Jan. 20 in a key game for both playoff positioning and bragging rights. Powered by 11 points each from Tyler James and Doug Sheldon, and a suffocating defensive effort in the second half, Wills Point took home a 39-27 win over the Eagles.
Play was hotly contested in each of the first two quarters as the Eagles built a 13-10 lead after eight minutes of play, and maintained a 20-19 lead entering the half.
Third quarter play would turn the tide in Wills Point's favor, however, as the Tigers came out of the half on a 13-3 run to take a 32-23 advantage into the final quarter.
Canton continued to struggle offensively down the stretch, scoring only four points in the final frame during the Tigers' 39-27 win.
