City leaders review 2016, look ahead at 2017
In anticipation of the new year, we here at the Wills Point Chronicle requested that city of Wills Point leaders reflect on the city's accomplishments in 2016, while also looking ahead at goals for 2017 and beyond.
As the city reflects on 2016, city leaders focused on planning for future growth, business expansion, and economic development through collaboration with Wills Point Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors, business owners, and property owners. City employees focused on improving city services, customer service, and community awareness. Department heads worked together to create more efficiency within their budget, allowing availability of excess funds for unforeseen emergency repairs.
A project to repave 1.5 miles of streets began in the spring. This paving project required the relocation of several sewer connections, along with additional drainage preparation to keep water off the newly paved streets. The total amount spent on repairing, replacing, and patching streets throughout the year was $428,431.96. The city is currently in the process of receiving bids on upcoming street projects planned for late summer 2017. The street crew was busy patching, along with replacing street signs and culverts, while maintaining city properties, including parks. They also conducted maintenance on equipment, tree trimming, downtown clean-up, animal control, banner replacement, and worked with festival organizers to insure safe travels for vehicle operators through staging of detours.
