Wills Point Police Department issues alert

An unsettling trend of thieves attempting to defraud residents recently took a new form locally recent, with more than a dozen cases credit and debit card abuse being reported. In a Facebook release dated Dec. 16, the Wills Point Police Department warned: “Credit/Debit Card abuse is the use of your credit card or debit card by another to obtain a benefit fraudulently. This is the most common type of identity theft and can occur whether or not the person physically has your actual card. Please be vigilant of credit/debit card slots as you swipe or insert your card.

“A recent high alert of credit/debit card fraud has occurred within the area. Credit/Debit Cards are being Skimmed, Hacked, or Phished at various local gas stations. The skimmers are using the victims credit/debit card information at gas stations and ATM's in the Ector County and Midland County area. Its prudent to check your bank accounts. If you review your statement or accounts and find that your credit/debit card has indeed been skimmed, call your credit card or bank immediately to let them know about the fraudulent charges and to protect yourself from further criminal activity on your card.”
