Funeral services for Mark Edward Smith, 55, of Edgewood, were held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at Goodwill Church of God in Goodwill, La., under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point. Burial followed at Redwing Cemetery in Oak Grove, La.

 He passed away Oct. 26, 2016, at his home in Edgewood.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 4, 1961, in Oak Grove to Thurlan and Lonnie Mae Smith. He was raised in Lake Providence, La. and graduated from Briarfield Academy. He played collegiate baseball and later earned his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. 

He coached baseball and spent time at Kansas State University and the University of Central Arkansas. He also coached Capital Baseball in Shreveport, La. for Health Care Capital.  His passion was baseball and he truly loved all of his players. He worked many years in nursing home administration. 

He married Stacie Travis Nov. 6, 2004, in Edgewood. They lived in Edgewood and were members of Edgewood Church of Christ.  He enjoyed sports, hunting, and was great at telling stories and jokes. 

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Thurlan and Lonnie Mae Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Stacie of Edgewood; sister, Karen Nash of Minden, La; father-in-law and mother-in- law, Neal and Kay Travis of Edgewood; nephews, Trey Guenard and wife, Christy of Stonewall, La., Lance Guenard and wife, Carla of Keithville, La., Chandler Travis of Edgewood,  Mason Travis of Edgewood, Randal Alaniz of Edgewood and niece, Rayna Alaniz, also of Edgewood; brother-in-law, Cavin Travis and wife, Wendy of Edgewood; sister-in-law, Ronda Alaniz and husband, Roland of Edgewood; nine great-nieces and nephews; many other family members, and his favorite friend, his dog Catcher.
