Friday, Sept. 16, 1960:
Van Zandt County’s one million dollar road improvement bond election carried Saturday with an overwhelming majority. County Judge G.D. Staton reported today that 1178 voters favored the issue while only 249 voters cast ballots opposing the issue. Mr. Staton reported also that the bonds had been sold and after a 30 day waiting period required by the attorney general, work will get underway on the county roads.
Wills Point Tigers took advantage of three Mabank fumbles Friday night to beat the Panthers by a score of 14-6 in the Tigers’ first home game. Mabank received the kickoff and made a first down on the first series of plays. Then both lines tightened up and there were no more first downs until late in the quarter when Shepard recovered Joe Carson’s fumble on Mabank’s forty-yard line. Jerry Beck hit Sammy Gunter for an eight-yard pass. Then Beck plunged two yards for the first down. The Tigers made two more first downs, and on the fourth play of the second quarter, James McFarland ripped over into pay-dirt from the four. Beck’s extra point run was shy of the goal line. This made the score 6 to 0 in Wills Point’s favor. (See newspaper for complete article.)
W.W. Culpepper of Garland took over the duties as chief of police of Wills Point Wednesday morning Sept. 14. His application was accepted Tuesday afternoon in a special called meeting of the city council. The new chief of police was formerly employed as security officer at Temco Air Craft Co., in Garland, and was also with the Garland Police Department prior to that.
