Sept. 8 date for native plant seminar

The Van Zandt County Master Gardeners along with the Van Zandt County Extension Wildlife and Natural Resources committee will be hosting a Native Plant Seminar Sept. 8 at Farm Bureau, 281 E. Hwy 243 Canton.

Registration for the event starts at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 6 p.m.  

Cost is $10 per person which covers the cost of the program, snacks and handouts.  RSVPs are needed to the County Extension office by Sept. 1 and can be made by calling 903-567-4149.

 County Extension Agent Tommy Phillips states, “I really think our two groups have joined forces to develop a program that will be a benefit to anyone interested in native plants for wildlife and those that are interested in utilizing native plants in and around their home. “

6 – 6:10 p.m. – Welcome and Introductions

6:10 – 7 p.m. – Native Prairie Restoration – Heidi Bailey, Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist

7 ­ – 7:15 p.m. – Break

7:15 – 8:15 p.m. – Native Grass and Plant Selection – “In the Wild and in the Yard” –  Bailey; Dr. Dotty Woodson, extension program specialist, water conservation; Tommy Phillips, VZC extension agent

8:15 – 9 p.m. – Utilizing Natives in the Landscape – Woodson
