Tigers top Van on Senior Night

The Wills Point Tigers tightened their grip on the second seed in District 14-4A play over the course of the past week, registering back-to-back wins over the rival Van Vandals and Emory Rains Wildcats.

The Tigers celebrated Senior Night April 22, recognizing the contributions and achievements of Jarred Sanford, Riley Ramsey, Logan Morris, Kolton Adams, Hosea Carroll and Christina Aubert prior to play against Van.

Despite an early 2-1 deficit, Wills Point delivered a 12-5 runaway victory over the Vandals.

Trailing 1-0 after a Hosea Carroll single in the bottom of the first, Van moved in front with two runs scored in the top of the third. Rielly Krumvieda opened play with a single and, following a strikeout, Jax Tobias narrowly reached first on a single thanks to a sterling defensive effort by Wills Point’s Logan Morris at third base. The bases were loaded on a Bret Hale walk, and Jacoby Bogue singled in two runs on a single to left.

Wills Point came roaring back in the bottom of the third inning, batting around in a nine run inning to take a commanding 10-2 lead over the Vandals.

The Tigers started the inning by loading the bases on a Logan Morris walk, Hosea Carroll single and Caden Bennett walk. Riley Ramsey hit a chopper to second that was misplayed, allowing the Tigers to tie the score at 2-2. Seth Wilson picked up an RBI on a hit by pitch and, after a strikeout, Wills Point continued to add to its lead after Jayton Oldacre getting hit in his batting helmet by a pitch.

Already in front 4-2, the lead continued to grow on a Sam Berberich double to left that scored both Ramsey and Wilson, a fielder’s choice by Jarred Sanford, a wild pitch, a sacrifice by Logan Morris and a double deep to left by Caden Bennett.

Van responded by cutting the lead down to 10-5 with three runs in the top of the fourth, scoring on a Rielly Krumvieda single, a Brett Doring sacrifice fly and a Tiger fielding error.

Wills Point tacked on a pair of runs over the game’s final innings, closing out the 12-5 win over the Vandals.

Leading hitters in the win for Wills Point included Jarred Sanford going 2/4 with 2 RBI and two runs scored, Hosea Carroll going 2/3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Seth Wilson going 2/2 with an RBI and three runs scored, Caden Bennett going 1/2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, and Sam Berberich going 1/3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. 

Riley Ramsey got the start and win for Wills Point, allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Kolton Adams pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing no hits while striking out seven.

Wills Point followed their big win over Van with another lopsided decision, shutting down Emory Rains with ease in a 7-0 win April 26.

The Tigers scored first and never looked back, as lefty Hosea Carroll delivered a six strikeout, one-hit performance on the mound.

Caden Bennett got the Wills Point offense going in the bottom of the first inning, doubling home Logan Morris for the 1-0 lead. The margin widened to 3-0 in the top of the fourth, with Bryan Mitchell hitting a sacrifice fly to score Riley Ramsey and Sam Berberich doubling home Seth Wilson.

Wills Point continued to grow its lead progressively throughout the night. A passed ball in the top of the fifth allowed Jarred Sanford to make the score 4-0, and Jayton Oldacre doubled later in the same inning to score both Tyler James and Kyle McCarver.

Seth Wilson picked up an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh, capping the scoring to close out a 7-0 Wills Point win.

Leading hitters for the Tigers included Caden Bennett going 3/4 with two doubles and an RBI, Seth Wilson going 2/3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Jayton Oldacre going 1/3 with a double and 2 RBI, Sam Berberich going 1/3 with a double and an RBI, Jarred Sanford going 1/2 with a run scored, Logan Morris going 1/4 with a run scored and Riley Ramsey going 1/4 with a run scored.

Wills Point is scheduled to close out its district slate tonight (April 29) with a game against current third seed Canton. 

Current District 14-4A standings show Brownsboro in first with an 9-2 record overall, followed by Wills Point in second with a 7-4 record, Canton in third with a 6-5 record, Van in fourth with a 5-7 record and Emory Rains in last with a 1-10 record.
