National Day of Prayer to be observed locally

The 65th annual National Day of Prayer is scheduled for Thursday, May 5.

The event will be observed in Van Zandt County from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. on the north side of the county courthouse.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

According to information from the organizers of the prayer service, “the theme for 2016 is ‘Wake Up America,’ emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to return to the God of Fathers in reverence for His Holy Name. To further highlight our theme, we’ve chosen Isaiah 58:1 as our Scripture for this year.”

Isaiah 58:1 reads: Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.

“The National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans. It is a day that transcends differences, bringing together citizens from all backgrounds. The Ministers Fellowship of Canton encourages everyone to attend this event on May 5 as our community joins with other communities around the nation for the National Day of Prayer,” organizers said.
