Wood wins title at county livestock show

Wills Point High School senior D.J. Wood was a big winner at the Van Zandt County Livestock Show April 7-8, winning Grand Champion Market Steer.

The Wills Point High School FFA Department has performed exceptionally well throughout the 2015-’16 school year, bringing home multiple awards from competitions and events from across the state.

The Van Zandt County Junior Livestock Show proved to be no exception, with WPHS senior D.J. Wood winning the Grand Champion Market Steer competition with his entry.

Wood, an FFA member for the past four years, currently serves as the president of the Wills Point FFA chapter.

He has competed in market steers for the past four years, winning Senior Showmanship over Market Steers in each of the past two years.

In 2016, Wood took home Supreme Showman honors at the Fort Worth Junior Brahman Show.

He has shown Red Brahman cattle since he was eight years old, and is currently ranked in the top ten for Red Brahman in the Texas Junior Livestock Association.

Following graduation, Wood plans on attending Tarleton State University in the fall while majoring in Animal Science.

Wood stated, “I hope to continue my family’s registered Brahman ranch and make it more successful.”
