Softball team drops two district contests
The Wills Point Lady Tigers have found themselves in an offensive slump in recent weeks, struggling to keep pace with the high-powered offensive teams that call District 14-4 home. Unfortunately, that trend continued in games against both Rains and Canton over the past week, with the offense generating just five hits and one run combined in two losses.
Wills Point kept things close with Rains throughout much of their April 8 meeting before a flurry of late offense propelled the Lady Cats to an 11-1 victory. The Lady Tigers notched just three hits in the game while struggling defensively with four errors.
Rains got itself on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a quick run. That lead would gradually build over the course of the night as the Lady Cats added a single run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and four more in the top of the sixth to take a 9-0 lead on the Lady Tigers.
Wills Point picked up its lone run in the bottom of the sixth, getting a jump start from a Kaylie Willis walk to start the frame. Willis advanced to second on a groundball to third before coming home on a sharply hit Brittany Barrett double to right.
Rains closed the door from there, scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh to close out the 11-1 win.
Leading hitters for Wills Point in the loss included Brittany Barrett going 1/3 with a double and an RBI, Meredith Edwards going 1/2 and Kamree Clark going 1/3.
Wills Point traveled to Canton April 12, picking up just two hits in a 15-0 loss to the rival Eaglettes.
Canton plated multiple runs in each inning played, tallying seven in the first, two in both the second and third innings and four more in the bottom of the fourth.
Freshman Jessie Martinez and senior Lori Ellington were the only two Wills Point players to reach base via hits.
Wills Point will wrap its 2016 softball season at home April 19 against Brownsboro. First pitch will be 6 p.m., with senior players being recognized prior to the start of the game.
