Farmers Market begins fourth year April 29-30
The Wills Point Community Farmers Market will kick off its fourth year of existence from 8 a.m. to noon April 29 and 30 at the historic Depot Museum in downtown.
In previous years, the market had been held on the grounds of Bill “Ike” Allred and at Bruce Cabin, the site of Wills Cabin, during the summer months. This year marks the second consecutive year of being stationed next to the Depot Museum.
In years past, items for sale at the market have included homegrown produce and herbs, eggs, as well as jams, jellies, canned and baked goods.
“Farmer’s markets are becoming increasingly popular. Consumer interest in obtaining fresh produce from the grower, increased awareness of shopping locally and the concept of ‘community supporting community’ makes it a perfect opportunity for communities,” organizers said in a news release.
“Direct marketing of produce and products through farmers markets is an important sales outlet for agricultural producers nationwide. Food in the United States travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to the kitchen table. Shipping costs are passed on to the consumer and the cost/process of shipping and packaging contribute greatly to pollution.
“Today, there are nearly 4,800 farmers markets operating throughout the nation. Wills Point is proud to add to that growing market. Customers at the Wills Point Farmers Market can expect to find farm fresh produce, baked goods, eggs, honey, plants and value added items like jams, jellies and home-canned foods, soaps and more.
