Lady Tigers blanked twice versus Brownsboro, Van
The Wills Point Lady Tigers found themselves on the wrong end of back-to-back shutouts over the course of the last week, losing decisions against both Brownsboro and Van as the District 14-4A play hits the home stretch.
Wills Point finished with nearly as many errors (3) as hits (4) during play against the Bearettes April 1, struggling in several key facets in a 5-0 loss.
After a scoreless first inning, Brownsboro got on to the scoreboard by getting a two-out walk, single, and RBI double for a 1-0 lead.
That advantage held until the bottom of the fourth, when a Brownsboro single and triple doubled the lead to 2-0. The Bearettes tacked on two more runs in the frame, capitalizing on a Lady Tiger fielding error and a fielder’s choice for a 4-0 advantage.
Brownsboro added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, closing out the scoring and securing a 5-0 win over the Lady Tigers.
Leading hitters for Wills Point in the loss against Brownsboro included Lori Ellington, Kamree Clark, Kaylie Willis and Deanna Donaldson all finishing 1/3 at the plate.
Junior righty Adrianna Holland took the loss despite a strong effort on the mound, allowing six hits and just two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings on the mound. Kamree Clark pitched 2/3 innings of scoreless softball in relief.
The story against Van April 5 would play out in a similar fashion, with just one Lady Tiger picking up a hit in a 15-0, four inning loss to the Lady Vandals.
Van scored three runs in the bottom of the second, one run in the bottom of the third and 11 runs in the decisive fourth to close out play.
The Lady Vandals got on the scoreboard against Wills Point courtesy of two consecutive fielding errors in the bottom of the second. The 1-0 lead was promptly turned to a 3-0 lead in the same frame with an RBI single from Bailey Daniels and an RBI double from Ashley Gregory.
Van’s Kyla Jones came home to score in the bottom of the third inning on a Hallie Wilkerson single to left for a 4-0 Lady Vandal advantage.
The game was blown wide open in the bottom of the fourth, with exploding for 11 runs to put the game out of reach. Impressively, the Lady Vandal quartet of Devri Cotton, Racheal Thomas, Morgan Benge and Baleigh Briggs delivered a stretch of four consecutive doubles in the heart of the decisive stretch.
Kaylie Willis finished with the lone hit in the Lady Tiger attack, recording a leadoff single in the top of the second inning.
Wills Point will have a tough road in the coming weeks, wrapping up district play with a home game against Rains April 8, a road game against Canton April 12, and a season closing home contest against Brownsboro April 19.
