Turnout at the Agri-Business Conference held Tuesday in the high school auditorium was excellent, with more than 250 attending the program throughout the day.
Mayfield Tractor Co. was robbed sometime between Saturday night and Monday morning at
7 o’clock, according to Ed Plessis, chief of police, who investigated the robbery.”
Residents of Van Zandt County were reminded today that the 1960 deadline for having their motor vehicles inspected is midnight April 15. Captain Marvin Blount, Motor Vehicle Inspection Service of the Texas Department of Public Safety, stated today there are 9,000 motor vehicles registered in Van Zandt County. Owners are urged to have their vehicles inspected as early as possible in order to avoid the last minute rush.

Feb. 18.
Named the 1960 Betty Crocker homemaker of tomorrow in Cartwright high school is Josephine Tension. She received the highest score in a 50-minute written examination on homemaking knowledge and attitudes taken by graduating senior girls at Cartwright. Her examination paper will be entered in competition with other high school winners to name the state Betty Crocker homemaker of tomorrow. She will receive an award pin, representing the slogan, “Home is where the heart is.”
Fort Ord, Calif., Private Dan B. Parker, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Parker, Route 2, Wills Point, recently received a Certificate of Achievement from Colonel Arthur McBride, commanding officer of the 4th Brigade, Fort Ord, Calif. Private Parker, a member of Company A, 8th Battle Group, 3rd Brigade, was selected the outstanding Trainee of his basic training company in recognition of his military bearing and the proficiency he demonstrated in all phases of the training conducted at Fort Ord.
Cradle Roll: Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jack Bracken of Dallas are the parents of a daughter, Julie Ann, born January 26 in a Dallas hospital. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bracken and Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Cawthon of Dallas, formerly of Wills Point.
The Cartwright Tigers used a devastating fast break and deadly accuracy from the field Friday night in completely subduing Ledbetter school of Dallas, 104-31. This is a new all-time single game scoring record for high school games in Cartwright gym. Charles Jackson and Roy Spencer tied for the game’s high point honors with 28 points each. Freddy Asher hit for 26 and Robert Spencer chipped in 16. Leo Woods and Nathaniel Sparks scored 4 and 2 points respectively. The Cartwright B team also won over Ledbetter’s B team 27-25. Bill Spencer paced the Junior Tigers with 15 points, J.W. Mackey was second with 9.
The Margaret Wynne Garden Club met in the home of Mrs. T.E. Murray, Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, with Mrs. John Scott as co-hostess. Mrs. T.L. Sadler, president, presided over the business session. Mrs. George Yates, chairman, gave the nominating committee’s report and the following officers were elected: Mrs. T.L. Sadler, president; Mrs. Wayne Dawson, first vice president; Mrs. W.R. Moon, second vice president; Mrs. John Scott, third vice president; Mrs. N.J. Tomlin recording secretary; Mrs. J.L. Ezell, corresponding secretary; Mrs. W. Glaze, treasurer; Mrs. R.S. Teague, reporter; and Mrs. R.J. McLeod, parliamentarian.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. J.E. Baxley Thursday afternoon, Feb.11, at Eubank and Co. Funeral Chapel. Jake Norris, pastor of the Elwood Baptist Church, conducted the services. Interment was in White Rose Cemetery. She was born Nov. 4, 1887, in Arlington, daughter of Fannie and Fred Appleton. On Jan. 19, 1907, she was married to J.E. Baxley and in 1919, she and her family moved to Wills Point to make their home. Survivors include her husband, two daughters, two sons, including Meredith Baxley of Wills Point, two brothers, one sister and eight grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. E.W. Conn are pending at Eubank Bros. Funeral Home in Canton. Mrs. Conn died suddenly Thursday morning at her home. Survivors include her husband, four sons, two sisters and one brother.
The Elwood Baptist Church will hold its annual homecoming services Sunday, February 28. Rev. R.P. Campbell will give the morning message with Rev. Cloyne Miller bringing the afternoon message. The program is to begin at 10:15 o’clock with a song service conducted by Rev. J.P. Trent. Rev. L.L. Griffin will give the devotional at 10:45. A cordial invitation is extended to everyone to attend the service.
Effective with the close of business on Saturday, Feb. 14, 1960, the partnership formed by Jack G. Campbell and Thomas E. Campbell doing business as Campbell’s was terminated. Jack G. Campbell purchased the interests of Thomas E. Campbell in the Canton Herald and will operate the firm in Canton as sole owner; and Thomas E. Campbell purchased Jack G. Campbell’s interests in the Wills Point Chronicle and will operate the firm in Wills Point as sole owner. The firm of Campbell’s has enjoyed fine support from the merchants and both Jack Campbell and Tom Campbell express their thanks for the fine support given them during the past 14 years. The Chronicle will continue to do quality printing of all types.
