Tommie Cunigan 1929-2016

Funeral services for Tommie Loraine Cunigan, 87, of Wills Point, were held Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, at Saint Mark Christian Methodist Episcopal Church under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point.

Burial followed at Haven of Memories in Canton.

Mrs. Campbell was born Feb. 10, 1929, in Ore City to Annie Campbell and Tommie Campbell.  As a child, she and her nine siblings were members of the Pine Grove Baptist Church where their mother was the Sunday School Superintendent.

After graduation from New Mountain High School she attended Texas College in Tyler and from there she moved to Wills Point. In 1948, she became a member of the Saint Mark Colored Methodist Episcopal Church.

Her ministries at St. Mark included Sunday School, The Missionary Society, senior choir, stewardess board, and church trustee.  Wherever there was a need she was always there to serve.  Additionally she was a member of the Heroine of Jericho Lodge #170, the Eastern Star Mathis Delight #237, the Cartwright Home Demonstration Club and secretary of the Greenwood Cemetery Association.

She married Leon Cunigan Aug. 5, 1950, and together they raised four children.  She instilled a love for God in her children by her life’s example. 

Miss Tommie, as she was lovingly known in the community, managed three family business, Cunigan’s Laundry, Cunigan’s Car Wash and Miss Tommie’s Restaurant. She was well known for her famous homemade pies.  

Her husband, Leon, passed away Nov. 10, 1980.  Several years later she married Mydera Britt who proceeded her in death May 7, 2008.

She was also proceeded in death by her parents, Annie and Tommie Campbell; and a son, Leon Cunigan Jr.

Mrs. Campbell died Feb. 12, 2016, and leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Eloise Brown of Gardena, Calif.; her four children, Helen Harris (John), Calvin Cunigan (Lynda), Lonnie Cunigan (Peggy) and Melvin Cunigan (Vickie); 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren
