Three incumbents file during first week
Election season got underway last week with candidate filing for two seats on the Wills Point City Council and three places on the Wills Point ISD Board of Trustees beginning.
Over the first week of filing both incumbents in the city race, Mike Jones and Wade Emerson, and one of the two incumbents in the board of trustees race, Mike Matus, have all returned the necessary paperwork announcing their candidacy.
Filing is scheduled through Feb. 19 for both the city and school, with election day set for May 7.
City Council
Candidate filing for two seats, currently held by Wade Emerson and Mike Jones, will be up for election on the May 7 ballot. Both wasted little time in declaring their intent to run for another two-year term, filling out and returning paperwork.
Candidate packets for a seat on the council can be picked up at the Wills Point City Hall building located at 120 N. 5th St. during regular business hours.
According to the Secretary of State’s office, to be eligible to run for a council seat, a person must have been a resident of Texas for one year and a resident of Wills Point for six months prior to the filing date. They must also be 18 years of age and be a registered voter before the end of the filing period.
School Board
Candidate filing for three places, including the vacant seat formerly held by Bryan Southard, as well as the seats currently occupied by Chuck Allen and Mike Matus (who took a place on the board when former trustee Dyde Manning III resigned) also opened Jan. 20.
As of press time, Mike Matus had filed paperwork to run for the seat once occupied by Bryan Southard (which will be a full three-year term). The seat currently held by Matus will only be a one-year term.
Candidate packets for a seat on the board of trustees can be picked up at the Wills Point ISD Administration Office located at 338 W. N. Commerce St. during regular business hours.
To be eligible to run for a school board position in Texas, a person must have been a resident of the state for one year and a resident of the district he or she wishes to serve in for six months prior to the filing deadline.
Additional requirements include that the person must be 18 years of age and a registered voter before the end of the filing period.
