Lady Tigers fall to state-ranked Eaglettes, 71-20

The Wills Point Lady Tigers struggled to keep pace with the state-ranked Canton Eaglettes last week, falling to 0-3 overall in District 14-4A play with a 71-20 home loss Jan. 15.
Canton’s pressure defense and up tempo offense carried the first half for the Eaglettes, who built up a 28-7 lead after just one quarter of play. Eaglette post Lilly Nelson proved to be a tough cover on the interior, leading the Eaglettes with 9 points in the frame
Canton continued to roll in the second quarter, holding Wills Point to just two points to watch the margin grow to 45-9 going into the half.  
Five points each by Destiny Johnson and Kenley Nixon did more than enough to counter Wills Point’s three point effort in the third quarter, extending the lead even further to 65-12.
With the game well in hand, the Eaglettes put the game on cruise control over the course of the final eight minutes to close out the 51-point win over the rival Lady Tigers.
Offensive leaders for Canton included Kenley Nixon with 14 points, Lilly Nelson with 11 points, Destiny Johnson and Courtney Roberts with 7 each, Hannah Welty, Payton Williams, Taylor Tidwell and Mattie Tullos with 5 each, Hannah Manry and Holly Raitz with 4 each, and Sarah Bell and Emily Watson with 2 each.
Canton is scheduled to wrap up the first round of District 14-4A play with a rivalry game in Van Jan. 22. Other upcoming games for the Eaglettes are scheduled to include home games against Rains Jan. 26 and Wills Point Feb. 2.
Offensive leaders for Wills Point included Emily Smith with 7 points, Summer Golden and Adrianna Holland with 4 each, Hannah Price and Meredith Edwards with 2 each and Hannah Caldwell with 1.
The Lady Tigers were scheduled for an open date Jan. 19 before resuming district play with back-to-back road games in Brownsboro Jan. 22 and Van Jan. 26. The next Wills Point home game will be Jan. 29 against the Rains Lady Cats.
