Election filing opens for council, school board

Another local election season got underway this week with candidate filing for two seats on the Wills Point City Council and three places on the Wills Point ISD Board of Trustees beginning Jan. 20. Filing will through Feb. 19 for both the city and school, with election day set for May 7.

City Council
Candidate filing for two seats, currently held by Wade Emerson and Mike Jones, will be up for election on the May 7 ballot.
Candidate packets for a seat on the council can be picked up at the Wills Point City Hall building located at 120 N. 5th St. during regular business hours.
According to the Secretary of State’s office, to be eligible to run for a council seat, a person must have been a resident of Texas for one year and a resident of Wills Point for six months prior to the filing date. They must also be 18 years of age and be a registered voter at the time of the election.

School Board
Candidate filing for three places, including the vacant seat formerly held by Bryan Southard, as well as the seats currently occupied by Chuck Allen and Mike Matus (who took a place on the board when former trustee Dyde Manning III resigned).
Candidate packets for a seat on the board of trustees can be picked up at the Wills Point ISD Administration Office located at 338 W. N. Commerce St. during regular business hours.
To be eligible to run for a school board position in Texas, a person must have been a resident of the state for one year and a resident of the district he or she wishes to serve in for six months prior to the filing deadline.
Additional requirements include that the person must be 18 years of age and a registered voter at the time of the election.

Voting
Local election day is May 7. Early voting will be April 24 to May 3.
A person is eligible to vote if they are a United States citizen; are a resident of the county where they submit their voting application, are at least 18 years old on election day, are not a convicted felon and have not been declared mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated. Some felons may be eligible to vote if they have completed their sentences, probation or parole.
The last day to register and be eligible to vote in the May election is April 7
