Reunion held for WPHS Class of 1958

The Wills Point High School Class of 1958 celebrated its 57th class reunion Oct. 24 with a potluck dinner at the Calloway Lake near Wills Point. Maston Mitchell provided the facilities that were prepared for the event by Ray and Mary Page. They also provided a main dish of meatloaf using an old family recipe. Other class members brought a wide variety of side dishes and desserts.
Donald Wheeler (Class of 1974) and Ray and Mary’s son, Jonathon Branch (Class of 2012), helped in preparing food, setting up the cabin, and serving. Bill Bateman, Coy Wilson and Ray Page entertained the classes with guitar music that was enjoyed by everyone.
Despite heavy rain, attendance was good with 14 graduating Class of ‘58 members and nine spouses attending. This year’s reunion was special as the graduating Class of ’59 was invited with five members and one spouse participating.
Members of the Class of ’58 who attended were, Bill Rusk, Tommy Beck, Pat (Clemmons) Tolley, Mary (Mislivets) Harris, Linda (Jordan) Whiteside, Ray Page, Betty Sue (Scott) Cartwright, Truman Welch, Pat (Ashworth) Small, Bill Ashworth, Sue (Mayfield) Harrelson, Lyndell Kent, Patsy (Shinn) Plumlee, and Coy Wilson.
Class of ’59 members attending were, Patsy Mitchell, Carol Welch, Janet (Martin) Pebbles, Jean (Lamar) Westbrook, and Ruth (Jackson) Jordan. As the word spreads, the Class of ’58 is hoping more Class of ’59 members come for the reunion being planned for 2016.
Following a financial update by class treasurer, Sue (Mayfield) Harrelson, Patricia (Clemmons) Tolley read the list of deceased class members. Pat reported that twenty-five, who were members of the class at one time or another, have passed. They are, in order of death, Robert McManus, Paula Teel, Janice Jackson, Wylie McDaniel, Don Lide, Don Razz, John Neill, Charles Culver, Donnis Keith Willis, Avon (Cawthon) Welch, Karron Delois (Hollister) Ellis, Donald Edwards, Susan (Adams) Berg, Linda (Davis) Logan, Gloria Jean (Leister) Brown, Charles Ray Jurden, Jesse Thompson, Gerald Wilcoxson, Lorita Nell “Rita” (Rohus) Stephens, Beverly (Goodwin) Lide, James Adams, Kenneth Foster, Lynda (Teel) Frazier, Jerry Lynn (Jones) Smith, and Linda (Green) Moon. Of the original 53 class graduates, 19 or almost 36 percent have passed, leaving 34 class members surviving.
Truman Welch asked for blessing of the meal and prayed for safety for the class over the coming year. The class thoroughly enjoyed the participation of the Class of ’59 and invited them to attend the 2016 and future annual reunions.
