Wills Point History Friday, Oct. 7, 1949
The Van Zandt Count Christian Rural Overseas Program committee met in the assembly room at the courthouse in Canton Monday morning for the purpose of organizing the ensuing CROP drive in this county. A program was outlined by the group to have supervised meetings throughout the county for the purpose of collecting agricultural products for overseas distribution. This county is going to send raw cotton, and will accept it as donations. Money given to the drive will be used to buy cotton. (See newspaper for complete article.)
The Wills Point Tigers continued to ring the warning bell to the teams in the district which have counted them out at the running, as they defeated the Hillcrest Panthers on the local field Friday night 12 to 7 coming from behind in the last two minutes of the contest to score the winning touchdown. (See newspaper for complete article.)
For the first time in the history of the local colored school a football team will be fielded on the local gridiron Thursday night, Oct. 13, when the Cartwright High School 11 will battle the Terrell High School team. Coached by N.L. Morehead, the local group has been working hard since the opening of school preparing for the initial contests. Due to many of their prospective players picking cotton, the local team has been handicapped for enough players to scrimmage every day, but they are expected to give a good account for themselves in the game next Thursday night. Probable starting lineup for the local squad will be Erskine Morehead, V. Hall, F. Spencer, R.B. Morgan, D. Brewster, W. Ervin, R.C. Morgan, C. Britt, O. Williams, H. Williams, and F. Williamson. (See newspaper for complete article.)
