Bobbye Thurmon 1923-2015

Funeral services for Bobbye Lindhorst Thurmon, 92, of Wills Point, were held Sept. 13, 2015, at Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home Chapel in Wills Point.

Bobbye Lindhorst Thurmon passed away Sept. 10, 2015, at her home in Terrell.  The second of two daughters, Mrs. Thurmon was born April 2, 1923, to Fred and Sadie Waggoner Lindhorst, two miles southeast of Wills Point city limits.

She was the eighth generation of immigrants from old Germany who settled in Illinois. She was a direct decedent of Abraham Lincoln's mother and her great-grandfather worked for the election of Abraham Lincoln's presidency. 

Her maternal great-grandfather, Martin Waggoner, owned the acreage where the City of Wills Point now sets.  He sold the acreage to T&P Railroad before the township was established.

Bobbye married Sterling Sledge in 1941.  She became the stepmother to Truman and Roe Wayne Sledge. Two children were born to this union, a daughter Sandra and a son, Lindy Lee Sledge. 

In 1968, she married Olan Thurmon.  Together they were active in Russell Memorial United Methodist Church, Wills Point Chamber of Commerce and Rotary International.  She served as president of the Chamber of Commerce from 1984 to 1985.  She was selected as “Bi-Centennial Women of the Year” in 1986 of the Rotary Anns.  This was before women were allowed in Rotary.  She served as election judge of Precinct 3 in 1994. 

Mrs. Thurmon was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Olan Thurmon; sister, Juanita Adams; and grandson, Robert Lee Sledge. 

She is survived by daughter, Sandra Baumann of Terrell; son, Lee Sledge of Stephenville, stepson, R.W. Sledge and wife, Charlyne of Terrell; stepdaughter Patricia Mitchell of Wills Point; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
