New dance coming to Canton Senior Citizens Center

Beginning Aug. 14, John Rugg hopes you dance – at least every second and fourth Friday evening.

The Country Drive Band will be hosting a dance every second and fourth Friday at the Canton Senior Citizens Center, 200 W. Groves St.

Rugg is the drummer for the band, which has been performing in the Van Zandt area for the last seven years.  Comprised of six area musicians with four of the members performing together at any one time, the band has a vast repertoire of dance music that is appealing to all ages to keep you boot scootin’ on the dance floor, Rugg said.

The group is enjoying its third year of Thursday night dances in Mineola, he said, and the band is excited to add the Canton Senior Citizens Center dance as their newest local venue in their busy performance schedule.

Several of the band members have a performance/stage history with headline artists such as Johnny Paycheck, George Jones, Alan Jackson, Mark Chesnutt and Loretta Lynn.  They also have been involved in studio backup, live television performance and worked in major dance clubs in Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

The Country Drive Band plays contemporary and classic country, blues, pop and rock ’n roll and Rugg said the group is excited to bring their music, harmony “and award winning smiles” to music and dance lovers in the Canton area.  He said the band is entertaining to watch with a stage presence that is fun loving and lively. “We love to make music and it shows,” Rugg said.

Although the dances are held at the senior citizens center, Rugg wants everyone to know, all ages are invited and the dances are non-alcohol, non-smoking, and family-friendly.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with dancing from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person and refreshments will be available for purchase.
