The colorful, 30 piece Shrine Band from Hella Temple, Dallas, will honor Wills Point Shriners with a 15 minute concert, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at the Wills Point train station. The band will be accompanied by the 25-member, Shrine Drum and Bugle Corps, the smart Shrine Drill Team of 28 members and the Shrine Patrol with its 36 members. The units are traveling on the special Shriner train, carrying about 200 Shriners from Dallas to the organization’s Imperial Council in Chicago. (See newspaper for complete article.)

Rotarians heard an explanation of the newly passed Gilmer-Akin school law which completely changes the school set-up over the state. The discussion was given by George D. Station, program chairman and local superintendent of schools.

Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Lasater have been advised by the war department of the arrival in New York of the body of their son, Lt. Haskell Lasater, who lost his life while flying a combat mission over Roumania. The body is en route to San Antonio, where it will be interred in the National Cemetery. Lt. Lasater was serving with the 98th Bomb Group stationed in Italy. It was during a raid over the oil fields of Roumania when his plane was lost. He enlisted in the armed forces in Fort Sam Houston in 1939.

An Associated Press story from Vatican City reported that Miss Mary Evelyn Blagg and eleven other Texans were received today by Pope Pius XII in a special audience. Miss Bragg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Blagg of Denton, is spending the summer on an extended tour of the continent. She is an instructor in political science at North Texas State College. The story reported the group was received in the Pope’s reception room in the Vatican. The Pope extended his blessings and greeted the group in audience lasting 20 minutes. Miss Blagg is a niece of Mrs. F.F. Gibbard of Wills Point.

Miss Mary Helen Spears is employed at Williams Hardware Co., while the Simmons are away on vacation.

 Mrs. W.P. Harris, has received a wire that her son, Welden Harris arrived in Beirut, Lebanon, last Thursday after a two months vacation in Texas. He has been in Saudi, Arabia, the past two years with the Standard Oil Co., but is stationed in Lebanon for the next two years.

Four 4-H Club boys took part in the district 4-H Club encampment held at Trinidad June 29 through July 2. Donald Hollister of Wills Point, David Terry of Canton, Leroy Chambers of Ben Wheeler and Tommy Turner of Grand Saline attended the encampment from Van Zandt County with 16 other counties represented.

“Mr. and Mrs. Blake Furrh were honored with a household shower Wednesday night, June 29, at the Alsa church. There were approximately 100 guests registered. Mrs. Bill Flowers had charge of the bride’s book. Mrs. Wilson Ring, Mrs. S.V. Wilson and Mrs. Oscar Kent served bottle drinks to the guests.

 Miss Christine Long, daughter of Mrs. Vinnie Long of Edgewood and Grady Hindman, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hindman of Elwood, were united in marriage at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Carey Daniel of Dallas on Saturday evening, June 25. Rev. Daniel officiated in the single ring ceremony. Clyde Long, brother of the bride, was best man. Maid of honor was Miss Wanda Hindman of Bakersfield, Calif. The ceremony was attended by Mrs. Vinnie Long, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Long and Mrs. Lucy Spears of Edgewood, Mr. and Mrs. Hill of Dallas and Mr. and Mrs. Garth Slaughter of Canton.”
